Stay Hot but Keep Your Polish Cool: How to Keep Your Nail Polish Looking Fab in the Heat

12th August 2024

Hello, fellow polish lovers! 🌞 If you're anything like us at BEAU Polish, you've probably spent more time this summer picking out the perfect shade of “Tropic Like It’s Hot” or “Your Fuchsia Is Bright” than worrying about what the sun might do to your freshly painted nails. But let’s face it, as much as we love soaking up the rays and showing off our bright, bold, and beautiful nails, hot weather can be a real troublemaker for your mani. Don’t sweat it though—we’re here to spill the tea on how to keep your polish as flawless as your summer tan!

The Sizzling Effects of Heat on Your Nail Polish

So, what exactly does that summer heatwave do to your nail polish? Let's dive in:

Sticky Situations:

Heat can turn your polish into a sticky, goopy mess. When your nail polish is exposed to high temperatures, even a brand-new bottle of our fabulous Heat-wave Me Off can suddenly feel thick and difficult to apply. This happens because heat causes the solvents in the polish to evaporate faster, making the formula thicker than it should be.

Bubble Trouble:

Applying your polish when it’s too hot can lead to a bubbly disaster! Those little bubbles that pop up during drying? They’re caused by trapped air and rapid drying, both of which are more likely to happen when it’s sweltering outside. If you’ve ever noticed your polish looking like it has a case of the fizzies, the temperature is likely to blame.

Fade Away:

Bright, bold colours are meant to turn heads, but too much sun exposure can cause them to fade faster than you'd like. UV rays can break down the pigments in your polish, leaving you with a lackluster look.

Keep Your Polish Cool and Collected

Now that we’ve got the lowdown on the hot mess that can happen, here are some cool tips to keep your nails looking fab all summer long:

The Cool Down Cure:

Here’s the good news—if you find your polish getting thick or bubbly, don’t toss it just yet! Simply let it cool down first to decide if your polish is still good or on it's way out. Once it returns to a normal temperature try again, your polish should go back to its usual smooth, easy-to-apply self. So, if you accidentally left your “Do What I Rosé” in a sunbeam, just give it some time to rest in a cool place before using it again. But as a rule, always store your nail polish in a cool, dark place in a drawer away from windows. This helps maintain the polish's consistency and prolong its shelf life.

Shade Your Nails:

We recommend painting your nails and allowing it to dry indoors, but we understand that the sun waits for no one! So when you're out in the sun, try to keep your hands shaded. This can help prevent your polish from fading and reduce the risk of bubbles forming as it dries.

Thin It Out:

As a last ditch attempt, if your polish gets a little thick and sticky, don't panic! Add a few drops of nail polish thinner (not remover) to bring it back to life. Just be sure to shake it well before applying.

Take Your Time:

Hot weather can speed up the drying process which means as you paint that polish is getting less viscous! Which can lead to uneven layers and a nightmare to paint. Apply your polish in thin, even coats and let each layer dry completely before applying the next. And here’s a crucial tip: Don’t overwork the polish by constantly brushing over the same spot—it makes the polish thicken quicker and then you are done for. Instead, apply your polish during cooler times of the day, like early morning or late evening, for the best results. Trust us, it’s worth the wait!
